The Brendan Iribe Center for Computer Science and Engineering elevates learning at the University of Maryland. April 27, 2019 marked the grand opening of the center. Funded by the generosity of Brendan Iribe, co-founder of Oculus VR, the state of Maryland and 110 plus additional donors, the Center for Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Maryland houses six floors of innovation and inspiration along with an auditorium seating up to 300 people. HDR created these floors to house specialized labs in artificial intelligence, robotics, and computer vision to name a few.
Iribe envisioned a space that would allow students to form meaningful friendships and teams. The design of the building allows for maximum possibility for innovation and industry. A connector space blurring the line between the inside and outside adds to the intrigue of seemingly limitless possibilities in the space. The center merges two of the college’s departments and the result is a mecca of brainpower. With hacker and maker spaces, students can collaborate or work independently on projects.
Other features of the building include natural light cascading throughout, a greenspace, and spacious common areas. OCL’s Glowsticks decadently graze the halls of the center in an ornate design, adding the perfect background for students to view while studying. A new 400kw generator electrifies the center along with lighting control and lightening protection. The university’s Neo-Georgian heritage emerges in the brick finishes decorating the auditorium walls.
HDR took advantage of standard Glowstick product and short lead times, all while creating an installation that almost looks bespoke. This project is a testament to creating unique and tailored visuals with standard product.
From standard to modified, to custom projects, Glowstick adds a creative spin to any space. In Glowstick Pendant, Glowstick Cluster, and Glowstick Diverge formations- the possibilities are endless and infinite. Glow like the world is yours.
