Because Sustainability is Everyone’s Responsibility
At OCL, we’re building sustainable solutions into everything we do. We’re committed to developing solutions that enable high performance buildings, reduce the environmental impact of our own operations and transform how people live and work – more efficiently, comfortably, and safely.
We aspire to be leaders in the lighting industry by operating sustainably and by helping our customers meet their sustainability goals and requirements. To succeed in this effort, we recognize that sustainability is a responsibility and opportunity shared across our entire organization.
As a part of Legrand’sCommitment to Social Responsibility, OCL is committed to developing sustainable solutions now and for the future. Here are the highlights, divided into three main focuses: business ecosystem, people, and environment.
Declare Label Evaluation
A Declare Label is a product transparency disclosure that identifies where a product comes from, what it’s made of, and where it goes at the end of its life. Declare Labels can contribute to the Living Building Challenge, WELL, and LEED v4.
In Phase 1, over 44% of our standard portfolio – Glowring, Loop, Glowstick, Glowball, Solo, and Twin – has received third-party verified Red List Approved or Declared labels.
In 2024, Phase 2 will add Neo, Rev, Stealth, Liner, Petals, Tubie, and Kwyet, and increase our portfolio to over 65% of our products carrying Declared labels.

RoHS 3 Materials Evaluation
What is RoHS?
RoHS stands for Restriction of Hazardous Substances, and impacts the entire lighting industry and many other industries too.
The directive requires manufacturers to minimize the levels of ten hazardous materials – lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBB, PBDE, DEHP, BBP, DBP, and DIBP – in their products and equipment.
OCL has completed RoHS 3 evaluation and materials restrictions for all parts used in >98% of our standard product.

OCL + BIOS
OCL offers BIOS SkyBlue in most of our products. Just look for the BIOS Illuminated icon on OCL spec sheets. Or search BIOS on our site.
BIOS SkyBlue™ Generation 2 LED circadian solutions contributes toward the Circadian Lighting Design Feature 54 under the WELL Building Standard™ v1 and Feature L03 under the WELL Building Standard v2.

New Product Development
OCL has integrated Eco Design and Circular Economy best practices into our entire product development process.
Our approval stage gates include input from cross-functional team members at OCL as well as sustainability experts from Legrand. Together we evaluate every opportunity including:
- Risk Assessment for Hazardous Materials [RoHS 3]
- Declare Label evaluation
- Design for the Circular Economy
- Operational and Embodied Carbon Reduction
- Recycled Materials Opportunities
- Durability, Longevity, and Serviceability
- Modularity, Disassembly, and Recyclability
- WELL, FitWel Contribution, Living Building Challenge, LEED v4, and more.
Operations & Manufacturing
Our priorities focus on mitigating climate change, preventing pollution, and manufacturing products with the environment in mind.
Key implementations by our Operations Team include:
- 100% of our cartons and pallets are made from recycled material or material purchased from FSC certified forest initiative.
- Achieved 20% weight reduction redesigning cartons and pallets. Saves on CO2 emissions.
- Transitioning our factory from 21% landfill diversion to over 60% with goals to increase this in the future
- Shifted our paper recycling to include additional material
- Implemented alternative processing for our mixed plastics
- Developed auditing process of trash bins to remove paper streams before going to landfill
- Partnered with new pallet recycling vendor to increase pallet recyclability
- Purchased reusable drink tumblers for all staff to eliminate single use plastic drinkware
Professional Growth & Development
OCL owes its long history of innovation and achievement, thanks to the creative thinking of all our people. We welcome enthusiasm, imagination, drive, and ingenuity and in exchange we offer the support and rewards to help our people reach full potential.
This includes cross-functional training, workshops, and projects to educate OCL’s people on Eco-Design, Circular Economy, Sustainability, WELL, and more.
OCL remains dedicated to giving back to our community, ensuring our workers are safe and healthy, helping our people develop, and actively striving for diversity and inclusion.
Initiatives & Organizations we support
Sustainable products start with transparency.
Transparency is moving to the forefront of the product selection and specification process. Leading building sustainability performance mechanisms, such as LEED® and the Living Building Challenge, drive demand for increased product transparency and create incentives for manufacturers to improve their manufacturing operations, product design, and supplier relationships.
At OCL, we are actively integrating sustainability into our processes so we can proudly contribute to your High-Performance Building initiatives and organizations.
